In a game that saw many momentum swings, Michigan State controlled the line of scrimmage until around the six and a half minute mark of the 3rd quarter. Unfortunately for the reigning Big Ten champs, Oregon proved to be the better conditioned team (the game time temperature peaked at 100 degrees) and exploded for 28 unanswered points and the win. Elsewhere, Va Tech dominated Ohio State in the Horse Shoe and Notre Dame took Michigan's lunch money, starter jacket, Jordan's, and girl friend, whooping Brady Hoke's Wolverines 31-0 at the Big House.
Oregon Looks like the best team in the country right now.
In the first quarter, Oregon scored first after a Connor Cook interception that gave them the ball on the MSU 39. After a FG set up by a 64 yard strike from Mariota to Darren Covington and a long 70 yard TD strike from Mariota to Allen on a coverage breakdown put Oregon up 18-7. Eliminating the turnover that gave the Duck’s a short field and two busted plays in the secondary, MSU’s O line and D Line constantly punched Oregon in the mouth over the next few minutes Big Ten team should. The high point for the Spartan’s defensive line came after back to back sacks forced the Ducks to punt from their own 19. The score was 18-10 Oregon at that point. MSU would go on to score on back-to-back drives that gave them a 24-18 half time lead. MSU would later get a 42-yard field goal early in the third quarter to go up 27-18.
Michigan State’s 11-point cushion was short lived. Oregon forced MSU to punt after a 3-minute, 6 play, 11 minute drive. Oregon then showed the Big Ten champs their jaw strength, shrugging off the cumulative damage from MSU’s earlier haymakers and started going right in Sparty’s mouth. Heisman hopeful Marcus Mariota completed three passes for 17 yards, 12 yards, and a 24-yard strike to Devon Allen to cut MSU’s lead to 27-25. The 17 yard completion came after Mariota evaded heavy pressure, breaking tackles and slipping defenders to make a running flip to Royce Freeman for 17 yard catch and run. That play converted a 3rd and 10 and gave Oregon the momentum which they never relinquished. It was the type of play that has propelled Mariota as the leader for the Heisman.
After the Ducks’ forced an MSU three and out Mariota hit Keenan Lowe on a 37-yard strike to take the lead. Before the TD Mariota converted a third and nine by scrambling for 11 yards. Then after a tough 8 yard run by Royce Freeman on first down, Freeman converted on a third and one. This brought the MSU secondary up and Mariota hit Lowe for six.
The nail in the coffin came on a third down Connor Cook sack on the MSU 12 forced a punt which gave the Ducks the ball on their own 46. This swing of momentum was huge. MSU’s defensive badly needed a break to sit under the mist fans to cool off. Instead they got torched on a two play drive capped off by a Royce Freeman 38 yard run.
What the hell is going on in Austin Texas.
"There are not enough players on his team that hate losing. It doesn't bother enough of them" - Quandre Diggs
Anwar Richardson from Orangebloods.com reported, "Charlie Strong sensed team would be embarrassed by BYU during pre game warmups."
Charlie Strong is a clairvoyant:
Charlie strong came to Austin and threw eight players off of the team and suspended four. Was this a purge of Mack Brown's kids that he felt didn't fit his style of coaching? Whatever the case may be, it appears these kids are not buying into his brand. They get UCLA at a "neutral" AT&T stadium AKA Jerry World Saturday. Another beat down like the one they suffered at the hands of BYU will not go over well with the Red McCombs of the Lone Star State.
Two Under the radar performers:
America meet James Conner. 6-2 250 pound 36 carries for 214 yards James Conner. He sheds tackles and has good quickness for his size. Expect the Panthers to ride Conner to an ACC Coastal championship. Well him and,
Boyd caught 5 passes for 72 yards and 2 TDs plus 2 carries for 23 yards, all with a dislocated finger. Check the highlights:
CHIPPER'S SEC LOCKS:
My buddy Chip the UGA Dawgs fan from South Carolina (this guy) told me that he guarantees Tennessee(+21) will cover the spread against Travis Knight and Oklahoma. He also said you can bet Mississippi State will beat South Alabama by 14 points.
I'll be updating tomorrow's action as the games progress. Check back in periodically for updates. Peace.
